In honor of Thanksgiving, today's post features a medley of two seasonal hymns: I Danced in the Morning (Simple Gifts)
and
Rejoice the Lord Is King
In contrast to my usual jazz piano style, I put together this medley during the years when I was the Music Director of the Hartford Street Presbyterian Church. During the pandemic our services were online. In order to provide a mediative atmosphere for congregation members as the beginning of the service, I arranged and recorded familiar hymns in a contemplative piano style.
In keeping with the Thanksgiving holiday, I selected the hymn, I Danced in the Morning. This piece is is set to the tune of the Shaker Hymn, Simple Gifts, which is often associated with Thanksgiving. I selected second hymn, Rejoice the Lord is King, because it goes with the theme of the final Sunday in the church year-the Feast of Christ the King.
